Civil society fraternity have demanded for urgent establishment of national food reserve to ensure consistent food production in the country.
They also want stringent inspection of agriculture farms to get rid of fake inputs in the market.
They reasoned that inadequate monitoring of agriculture farms is preventing the country from achieving adequate food production and proliferation of fake seeds in the market
Agnes Kirabo Executive Director of Food Rights Alliance says unless this is not checked the country will continue to suffer from food insecurity.
“we need stringent inspection of our farming systems and setting up of food reserve to ensure that government delivers insufficient food,” Kirabo said.
According to Kirabo there are 10.1 million hungry people in Uganda while the number of people who can afford food have poor diets eating junk foods resulting into increased disease burden.
Uganda will join the rest of the world to celebrate World food day on 16th October under the theme:our actions for future healthy diets.
In solving the anomaly, Kirabo advised government to scale up extension services to rural areas and engage in health education to reduce consumption of junk foods in urban areas.
