My Daughter Alaso And Her Demon Friend

Alaso came 16 years after I got married to Akello.  A priceless gift of my grizzle who came at a time when hopes had gone extinct. Her birth came with Several prophecies of herald to the deity of Abilabon, a creek my fore fathers offered sacrifices to.

“She’s a goddess” they said, the last wife of this unknown deity.

I lived in fear for several months after we had Alaso because she possessed very unique traits not dominant in children of her age.

I convinced myself that those were falacies because She’s a gift from God and God’s gifts are for good not sorrow.

At three, she would sit before the large mirror frame in my room saying mysterious things and laughing to herself.

Whenever I stare at her,the innocence in her eyes subdues my fears. I see but a child finding pleasure in the love of her solace.

I noticed she stops talking to the mirror once she senses a presence around, I had only sneaked to watch her play with the mirror severally.

A day came Alaso asked , “Daddy! Is it true you hate my friend?”

I raised my eye brows because I knew it’s just me and her in that apartment except the gateman and the gardener at their quarters.

“Which friend are you talking about?” I inquired curiously “My friend” Alaso said pointing to the mirror, “She stops playing with me whenever she sees you, she said you don’t like her. Is that true?” She asked again more mean this time.

Hahahahahaha! I laughed “kids can be ridiculous a times, where did you get that from.” I sighed
“Daddy, I’m not joking” she frowned but I ignored her temerity

“Mummy is waiting downstairs, dinner is ready” I kissed and smoothed her cheeks as we joined Akello my sweet wife in the dining.

I told Akello what transpired and we both laughed about it while she sat dumb with a hostile look.
That night Akello got a call at work; and left immediately after dinner, She was a cop. So I cuddled Akello toto bed early. Time:10:48 pm. We’d experienced a black out for a few days, so the only light was that of a rechargeable lamp beaming up the ceiling from the east of the room where it sat on a table.

I sat before the mirror frame to observe my healing scar I sustained on my neck when a boda boda knocked me.

Chirping of crickets trilling in unison grasped the fall.

I was struggling to see through the semi-dark room when I noticed a little creature on the mirror pass behind me, I quickly turned back to catch a glimpse of what it was.

A long-haired little girl on a grizzly gown walked through the door. I couldn’t see her face but the long braid swayed as she left the door and turned right toward Alaso’s room.
Fidgety! I tottered to the door and peeped but couldn’t find her trace, I hurried to Alaso’s room and she was asleep.

‘I’m sure of what I saw! A little girl in a gray gown entered this room just  now” I tried to convince myself but rather appeared more stupid. I walked briskly back to my room and shut the door, my heart throbbing vigorously.

“This is just an imagination” I breathed trying to simmer my nerves then I heard a shrieks from Alaso’s room, a sharp high-pitched scream!

” Alaso!!!” I ran to her room where the shout came from, the door was wide open but Alaso lay on her crib snoring.

I tottered into her room glued to the wall beside her door, My eyes running through the room in fear, I took a step, then two and the door slammed behind me immediately, A little voice giggled behind the door followed by faint footsteps.

I ran to the other end of the room beside Alaso’s cot with my heart in my mouth. It was clear I was under a siege.

“I want to play” the voice howled “Allow me to play! I want to play! Alaso I want to play!”
The little voice kept screaming behind the door throwing things around in anger, “this must be a poltergeist.” I thought.

And I gave Alaso sleeping pills so she won’t disturb me while observing that night’s routine.
The voice continued “Alaso come let’s play”

The door opened slowly then stopped half way. She walked inside, I couldn’t see her face, the moonlight piercing through hollows in the window was dim.

She stood by the door staring at me “Tell Alaso I want to play!” She sobbed softly

Cold sensations ran down my spine, afraid to the marrow, I stood motionless awaiting my fate
Her face became as bright as the moon, hairs covered a fraction of her face with blood dripping from her mouth, then she vanished.

I looked into the small mirror on the table and there she was staring at me with this mysterious look.
“Jesus!!! ” I jerked off sleep

Time: 6:58am.

“What is it?” Akello asked. She had come back and I didn’t notice.
“Al……Al…..alas” I stammered

“What about Alaso?” She asked but I Ignored her question and headed to Alaso’s room.

Guess what…..
As usual, she sat before the mirror in her room talking and laughing to her ……!
