Ebola Outbreak; Health Ministry Releases Guidelines

The Ministry of Health has issued a list of SOPs to follow in this unexpected outbreak of the Ebola virus in Mubende.

These SOPs are majorly aimed at health workers, communities and families members as well as other stakeholders at the frontline fighting the disease.

The government on Tuesday confirmed the outbreak of the Ebola virus and these guidelines follow as a result of that. The Ministry revealed that there is a chance of controlling the disease if treatment is administered early.

Caregivers were advised to provide plenty of drinks like water, tea or available beverages to an Ebola patient. They were also told that if possible they should encourage them to feed little by little, spoon by spoon.

The new SOPs released cover hand hygiene, personal protective injections, management of sharp objects and lab result management.

Apparently, the number of confirmed and suspected Ebola deaths has increased to 8. The contacts of these victims have been listed to a total of 43 at least according to the latest government updates.

The Ministry of Health last evening released a situation report. It showed that 11 suspected cases were isolated at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital. Samples were taken from the 11 suspects and sent to the Uganda Virus Research Institute for testing.

Up to 10 districts, Kampala inclusive have been mapped out, and rapid response teams dispatched to orient these districts on the outbreak.
