Apparently, as per the constitution currently, it’s the president who appoints the EC chairperson. However, according to the opposition, they want this clause to be scrapped.
“We want that section of the constitution, which only permits the President to appoint the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, to be changed so that the position is open for application,” she said on a local political talk show.
It should be noted that the Opposition has constantly accused the electoral commission of conspiring with the regime and stealing their victories.
This happened during the time of Eng Badru Kiggundu at the time Dr Kiiza Besigye was giving President Museveni a run for his money. It’s now the same case with Simon Byabakama in charge with Bobi Wine as the face of the Opposition.
However, according to NRM spokesperson, Rogers Mulindwa, NUP should be thankful to Byabakama. This is because he managed to organize a fair election. This is especially NUP got about 50 MPs just a few months after being in existence.
Adding to the submission of Hon Gorreth Namugga, opposition stalwart, Mubarak Munyagwa said the EC job needs a serious change.
According to the former MP, Ugandans will never be satisfied with the election results. This is as long as President Museveni continues to appoint the EC chairperson.
