Onyango’s team Mamelodi Sundowns won the league title which was the 11th in the club’s history. For Onyango, this was his 8th league winner’s medal. This feat made him the joint-most winner of league titles in the country’s major football league.
Onyango now shares this record with fellow Mamelodi teammate and captain Hlompho Kekana. The ex Cranes international took to his social media pages to congratulate his teammate and himself on this milestone.
“El Capitano Hlompho Kekana,
I’m so happy & proud to share this 8th title record with you my brother. It’s been a long journey through thick & thin. God bless you my guy.” Onyango posted.
Denis Onyango won his first three titles with Supersport United before adding another 5 he’s now won with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Onyango also walked away with the league’s award for the best goalkeeper after keeping 15 clean sheets.
The awards held by DStv yesterday saw Onyango beat off competition from three other goalkeepers.
The keeper who couldn’t hide his excitement announced the news on his social media pages.
“It was one hell of a season hampered with injuries but managed to sail through. I dedicate this award to my family. Would like to thank the people who have worked with me, who have built me, my head coaches, our goalkeeper coach, my teammates & my fellow goalkeepers. We won.” Onyango posted.
Onyango has had a brilliant career plying his trade down in the Cape and it’s something he will always be proud of.
