Family Of Fronasa Fighter Still Waiting On Pledges Of Museveni 5 years On The Road

The family of the late Raiti Omongin who was a freedom fighter under Front for National Salvation (Fronasa) are still upset over the the unfulfilled promises made by President Museveni.

According to One of the sons of the late Mr Festus Omongin said that the loss of their father who was the breadwinner of the family left them to live a miserable life as many of them later dropped out of school and traveled to Kenya to do odd jobs.

He says as a family they feel disappointed with the NRM regime which failed to recognise the contribution made by their father even after hosting the president several times at their home in Akolodongo central cell , Akolodongo ward in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District.

He says in 2018 three decades after capturing power the president invited them to State House Entebbe and pledged to help the family.

We thought God had answered our prayers but five years down the road the pledges made by the president haven’t been fulfilled and this has demoralized us.

….” The president pledged to provide us with alternative sources of livelihood and also set up development projects in memory of the late freedom fighter Omongin our father,”he said.

However Ms Augustine Omongin the daughter of the later also said that during the interface with the president, he made several promises including supporting the family to regain ownership of their farmland which they sold because of the hard situation they were going through following their father’s death.

She said that the people they sold land had accepted to relinquish the land only after they are compensated.

Another member of the family Asa Kalami Orimodi when interviewed said that Mr Museveni decorated their father as one of the Uhuru heroes when Uganda had celebrated 48 years of independence.

“ Only decorating isn’t enough the government should go ahead to empower the family economically ,”he says.

However state house officials couldn’t be reached for comment by our press time but the Residents District Commissioner Mr Nickson Owole said the family’s concern is on his table and his office is still following it.

“ This is a private arrangement where the president normally pledges to reward his friends which am aware and sure that he will do as he has done to others,” he said.

Fronasa was a militant group led by Museveni that fought alongside Tanzanian forces against Idd Amin regime.

Omongin who acted as a spy and trainer in the rebel group died in an ambush during the insurgency.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] section of women in Bugongo parish and Nawangaiza parish in Nawandala Sub County, Iganga District have decried the near-impossible terms set for them to access GROW funds. They have now petitioned their woman member of parliament for Iganga Hon. Kauma Sauda Alibaawo to ask the government for revised terms and conditions. This is to enable them to benefit from the program. The disgruntled women accuse the implementers of the program of charging the money. They are also asking for their land titles and land agreements. They said that such properties are governed by their husbands. These, therefore want the government through their woman MP to intervene and revise the requirements for one to benefit. The women were on Wednesday at Namabwere primary school in Nawandala Sub County. They had gathered in their respective groups to receive over 300 chickens from Hon Alibaawo in her campaign to improve the livelihood of women in Iganga district. Each group was given 50 chicken as start-up capital in their journey to prosperity. Read what some leaders said; Ms Naigambi Lydia from Nawandala Trading Centre says, “They solicited money from us through opening bank accounts and depositing Shs80,000. They also asked for land titles and land agreements from us yet we don’t have such things. I was informed that I needed to have a business with a capital of Shs4m yet my capital was very small.” The chairperson Kisoboka Saving Group in Nawandala Ms. Nakagolo Faith said they were not able to join the program. This is given the many conditions attached. She also asked their woman MP to raise their concerns to the relevant offices. The MP condemned the mode of implementation of the program. She cited that it has turned to benefit the well-off class of women other than the intended group. She further asked the government to intervene saying the current strings attached to the programme are very tight to accommodate a common woman. GROW project is a Government of Uganda initiative that arose out of the need to respond to the needs of women entrepreneurs. This is especially those who want to grow their businesses, sustain their self-employment and create more jobs.
