Apparently, Makubuya joined the group initially as a dancer. She was later cast as an actress and that famous show was her first gig in acting.
Speaking to Mildred Tuhaise on NBS, she had immense gratitude for the crew on the series. Since she was the youngest they, treated her with the utmost care and looked after her like a sister and daughter.
Initially, her mother wanted her to concentrate on her books. But the Ebonies assured her that she had a great talent. And they were sure that they bring the best in her.
“I joined the Ebonies as a dancer and then later onto That’s Life Mwatu, where I started acting. The people on the Ebonies set were good to me. Since I was the youngest in the crew, they treated me as a sister or daughter and always showed me care. My mother wanted me to study and concentrate on my books, but the Ebonies saw a talent in me that they wanted to nurture. The Ebonies managed to assure my mother they had my best interests at heart.”
Further, she said that she didn’t drop education down the gutter. She went ahead to do her Advancement Level exams. After that, she enrolled for a Bachelors of Music Dance and Drama because she wanted to complement her talent.
Besides she also wanted to challenge the myth that people who do MDD are not bright.
“I wanted to challenge the myth that those who do Music, Dance, and Drama are “abasilu dala dala’. People who pursue that course are actually really smart.”
Makubuya also expressed her gratitude to Ugandans for still recognizing her by the Nakawunde name. This is despite having retired frown the group a couple of years ago. It’s fair to say that Harriet Makubuya did justice to her role. That’s Life Mwattu is one of those local shows Ugandans paid attention to religiously.
