In a surprising move, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced his decision not to run for president in the upcoming 2026 elections. Taking to his official social media platform early Saturday morning, Muhoozi revealed that he was guided by a higher calling to prioritize his role within “God’s Army.”
Expressing his unwavering commitment to his father, the 80-year-old incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, Muhoozi declared his full endorsement of Museveni’s candidacy for the seventh presidential term.
This endorsement marks a significant shift in Muhoozi’s political trajectory, surprising many of his supporters who were gearing up for his anticipated presidential bid.
Muhoozi’s announcement comes as a sharp contrast to his previous stance, where in 2023 he fervently declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2026.
At that time, he rallied the youth of Uganda and the global community, advocating for a new era of leadership characterized by youthful vitality and vision.
Uncertainties looming
The reasons behind Muhoozi’s abrupt withdrawal from the presidential race remain shrouded in mystery, leaving both his supporters and political analysts puzzled by this unexpected turn of events.
Speculations abound regarding his future role within the military establishment, hinting at a possible continuation in his position as army chief.
As Uganda gears up for the 2026 elections, the political arena is set to witness the involvement of prominent figures such as singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, and veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Muhoozi’s decision not to pursue the presidency adds a new dynamic to the unfolding electoral landscape, setting the stage for a compelling electoral contest.
I would like to announce that I will not be on the ballot paper in 2026. Almighty God told me to focus on His Army first. So, I fully endorse President Yoweri Museveni in the next elections.

In reaffirming his allegiance to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Muhoozi emphasized the sanctity of his role within the military establishment.
Describing the UPDF as “Holy Ground,” Muhoozi Kainerugaba underscored his deep reverence for the institution, signaling his continued dedication to serving in this esteemed capacity for the foreseeable future.
