Government To Launch The Covid-19 Vaccination Drive Today

However much the vaccination is to begin on March 10th, the government is set to launch the activities later today. The launch will involve a subsequent distribution of the vaccine to different parts of the country.

Many myths about the vaccine have moved around over time. However, despite all these myths, the Ministry of Health National Taskforce kicked off an awareness campaign on the vaccination last week.

The campaign will help to sensitize the public about the vaccine and why they require it.

‘’There have been some fears among sections of the public on the implications of the vaccine and many things have been said. But our taskforces at various levels have embarked on an aggressive awareness campaign. This is to allow people to understand issues surrounding this vaccine,’’ Hon. Judith Nabakooba said.

She informed the press that the official vaccination will begin on Wednesday 10.

The Ministry of Health also started the training of the vaccinators who will administer the shots. Vaccination centres will include government health centre IIIs and IVs, district hospitals, regional and national referral hospitals as well as specialized institutions countrywide.

On Friday, Uganda received the first batch of 864,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The government of India also donated 100,000 doses of the vaccine to Uganda which it received on Sunday.

The government intends to vaccinate almost 50% of the country’s population which is about 21,936,011 people in a phased manner.

Who is eligible;

Nabakooba said the MoH will roll out the vaccine to age groups between 18 and 50 years in a staggered manner. This will happen until they vaccinate 49.6% of the entire population. The government will require all persons eligible for vaccination to present a national identification card or a passport for the refugees.

Given their nature of work, all health workers from all health facilities will receive the vaccine first. Nabakooba said that teachers are also a very important category as the country is planning on reopening schools.
