Heavy Rain Destroys Bridges Leaving Teachers And Students Stranded

Heavy rains in Manafwa District in Bugisu Sub-region have washed away a number of bridges that were aiding transportation.

This has left teachers and students from various schools stranded with no way of getting to their destinations. The destroyed bridges include Buwagogo-Bukewa, Shamukunga, Bunabwire, Shinje, and Bunasala.

Locals have revealed that some of these bridges were constructed in 2014 under the Peace Recovery Development Programme (PRDP).

Some of the schools that have been affected the most are Buwagogo Primary School, Shamukunga Primary School, and Bukewa Primary School. Also, Bukhabusi Primary School, and Bukukanza Primary School were affected.

One of the residents in the area, Ms Betty Namwano revealed that her children have missed school for the last three days.

“We have paid school fees and other requirements for our children to be at school. However, they cannot walk there because the bridge was washed away,” Ms Namwano said.

Some teachers have resorted to staying home until the bridges are reconstructed. Mr Matthew Mutambo, the Buwagogo Sub-county chairperson, said business in the area has slowed down.

“Some of the bridges were broken and others washed away by floods after River Manafwa burst its banks,” Mr Mutambo said.

Some healthcare facilities have also been cut off due to the collapsed bridges. Without a proper way to access them, health workers and patients are stranded.

Bulambuli district residents are also facing the same issue after bridges in a number of areas were washed away. On this side however, the disaster claimed the life of at least one victim.

“As districts, we can’t handle such a big disaster. That is why we are calling upon the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees to intervene,” Bulambuli chairperson Annet Nandudu said.

In August, floods left 29 people dead and about 1,500 others displaced after rivers Nabuyonga, Namatala, and Nashibiso burst their banks in Mbale City.
