The Kiteezi landfill in Wakiso district is typically a bustling hub of activity, as garbage trucks transport various types of waste from metropolitan Kampala on a daily basis.
However, yesterday marked a stark departure from the norm, as the landfill suffered a catastrophic collapse on Saturday, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property.
Amidst the chaotic scene, hundreds of onlookers gathered around the mounds of debris, while excavators tirelessly worked to uncover any potential survivors or victims trapped beneath the rubble.
Despite the efforts of the excavation team, including multiple excavators brought in to expedite the operation, the chances of finding anyone alive dwindled with each passing moment.
As distraught family members and friends consoled one another on the sidelines, a palpable sense of despair permeated the air, with some individuals grappling with the harsh reality that their loved ones may never be recovered.
Uncovering loss and tragedy amidst the rubble
The somber task force managing the recovery operation confirmed the retrieval of 21 bodies, with fears looming that the death toll could escalate as more sections of the collapsed landfill are meticulously excavated.
Many of the deceased individuals, predominantly informal workers such as scrap dealers, had established makeshift dwellings within the landfill vicinity for easier access to their work sites.
One resident, Daniel Mwebaze, recounted being jolted awake by the harrowing commotion on that fateful Saturday morning.
Despite the overwhelming odor of decaying waste lingering in the air, scores of curious spectators flocked to the site, capturing the grim aftermath on their mobile devices.
Subsequently, security personnel, including police and military officials, intervened to disperse the crowds, cautioning them about the potential dangers lurking amidst the unstable terrain.
Nevertheless, some stubborn onlookers remained steadfast, unwilling to heed the warnings and depart from the hazardous vicinity.
