Amanda Gorman recently experienced the unfortunate ‘’reality’’ of how they treat many Black Americans. She shared her distressing experience walking home on Friday, March 5 after a security guard followed her and called her suspicious.
Just two months ago, Amanda became an icon after reading her poem at the 2021 Presidential Inauguration. The poetess wore jewellery gifted to her by Oprah Winfrey.
After the inauguration, Michelle Obama interviewed her for the TIME magazine. She also signed a contract with IMG Models and is publishing three books this year. The books include her poetry collection, The Hill We Climb, and other poems, as well as a picture book.
This is all happening for her just one year after she graduated cum laude from Harvard.
However, despite all her achievements and status, she has earned since that time, she reveals that she was racially profiled. The 22-year-old activist described the incident on Twitter.
She wrote, ‘’A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight. He demanded if I lived there because you look suspicious’.’’
Amanda Gorman shared her response to the man’s demand: ‘’I showed my keys & buzzed myself into my building. He left, no apology.’’
She further said that this is the reality black girls are facing, that one day you are called an icon and the other day you are a threat. She, however, said the guard in a sense made a point calling her a threat, because she is a threat to injustice, to ignorance.
‘’Anyone who speaks the truth and walks with hope is an obvious and fatal danger to the powers that be,’’ she tweeted.
