International University Of East Africa Holds Vice Chancellor’s Forum

In an effort aimed at chatting ways to improve higher education in Uganda, International University of East Africa hosted vice chancellor’s forum at its headquarters in Kansanga.

Every year, Uganda Vice Chancellors Forum come together to deliberate on pertinent issues affecting higher education as a whole. This year’s edition hosted by International University of East Africa was held under the theme Competitiveness in Ugandan Universities where over 34 Public and Private Universities were represented during the conference.

UVCF is a dedicated group of Vice Chancellors’ and Heads of Institutions who came together as a united voice to share lessons on mutual concerns. UVCF enhances the sharing of knowledge, information and practices and advises Government on various policies on promoting University Education, it also publishes and carries out any other activity intended to promote Higher Education in Uganda.

IUEA Vice Chancellor Dr. Emeka Akaezuwa said Uganda is highly rated among the best Universities education in Africa saying this testimony to good quality of Education in Uganda.

He however noted that for public and private universities to become competitive within the East Africa region and Africa, there is need to adopt more practical courses and investment in research to make courses and universities relevant to changing world.

“It’s the responsibilities of all VCs’ present to ensure that the students are competent, competitive and highly professional in all their professional dealings,” Emeka said.

“However, Universities must also make their courses practical to product relevant graduates to society. As International University of East Africa, this is something that the University has considered as significant and absolute to ensure standard training, “he added.

Akaezuwa said to produce competitive students, VCs must become competitive in their personal growth and development saying some VCs feel they are at the top of their academic and professional achievement and they are more in arrivalism/vacation time stage of their professional careers and that must Dr. Emeka remarked.

International University E.A focus on improving student’s skills!

“We need more exceptional production of graduates in Science and Technology, Business & Literature! Africa still has a large market for talents in these industries! As we continue training and educating the continent, we must focus on the need of the society and produce excellent graduates to serve those needs in the society, “he said.

He also said there is need to improve students’ skills, mindset and work Ethics while they are at the University and ensure they are marketable.

Permanent Secretary ministry of education Alex Kakooza who represented First Lady’s Janet Museveni called all Universities and other tertiary institution of learning to benchmark their programs with the very best Universities in the World by advancing in tools of learning for the Universities if they are to pass out ready and employable graduates into the marketplace.

She said government will work in partnership with vice chancellors Universities forums to improve the qualities of Education in the country.

“there is fund for Innovations and Technology that the government has earmarked for all Universities to elevate their technological requirements and Innovation that will improve the quality of Education in the Country, “Janet Museveni said in a speech.

However, she called for active collaboration amidst the competitiveness saying active collaboration is key in becoming universally effective in competitiveness.

Vice Chairperson for UVCF Prof. Patrick Manu,VCBugema University lauded International University of East Africa for their top of the range infrastructure and  congratulated the Directors of IUEA for a highly commendable work on the standards of facility and construction at the University.

Finance Minister Matia Kasaija encouraged more collaborations amongst Ugandan Universities if they are realize quality teaching programmes and graduate excellent individuals who can compete at a global stage.

The conference was attended by Prof. Tikodri Togboa, Chairman Board of Directors Kiira Motors Corporation, Curriculum improvement in Ugandan Universities by Prof. Mary Okwakol the Vice Chancellor Busitema University, Research and Publications by Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies Makerere University.
