Islamic University First-Year Student Commits Suicide

The Islamic University in Uganda is in grief after one of their students committed suicide. On hearing about this, Mbale police quickly sprung into action to investigate the circumstances around this unfortunate incident.

Mr. Rogers Taitika, the Elgon regional police spokesperson identified the deceased as Fred Kaptire, 34. At the time of his death, Fred had been pursuing a Dioloma in General Nursing at IUIU.

Fred apparently hung himself at his home in Wagagai cell, Nkomo ward in Mbale district on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

“It is alleged that on Feb 5, 2023 at around 9:30 pm before the deceased committed suicide communicated to his wife, family members, and friends that he was going to commit suicide. The wife contacted several friends of the deceased to go and check on him in his hostel if he was fine,” Mr. Taitika said.

A friend of Fred’s, Mr. David Magusho found the body of the deceased hanging from the roof timber after a forced entry.

Ms. Rehema Kantono, the IUIU public relations officer said they were saddened by the sad news of their student’s demise. An unidentified source from IUIU said that the deceased had in the past threatened to kill himself.

These threats came majorly as a result of financial challenges according to the source.

The police, according to Mr. Taitika visited the scene to retrieve his body and took it to Mbale City mortuary for a postmortem. However though investigations into the matter are still ongoing to establish the trigger for the suicide.

A similar case happened in 2022, just about a year go as a law graduate also committed suicide although this had little to do with financial issues.

On February 28, a Twitter user identified as Anthony Ma started a thread on the platform. In the thread, he revealed how his roommate, Kevin hung himself using a t-shirt.
