He said this in response to Muslims outcry that they have been left behind in teaching Islamic Religious Education.
Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) alleged that the Education Service Commission(ESC), had segregated Muslims during the appointment and promotion of Islam teachers.
Just recently the ESC, named four assistant education officers to teach IRE. Unfortunately, of these four, none is a Muslim. Muslims have always been accusing the education system of sidelining them when it comes to teaching IRE.
However, Dr Asuman says this is not true at all. He says they just promoted the four members because they have been teaching IRE at diploma level. Apparently, these teachers upgraded to degree levels and this is why they chose them.
“We have since had a meeting with the UMSC with the view that these positions are ring-fenced for new graduate IRE teachers. This is what normally happens for every subject where we fail to get diploma teachers for promotion,” he said.
Dr. Asuman advises Muslims to always apply for these positions when they advertise them. Apparently, it’s not an issue of religion, but capability and expression of interest.
IRE is part of the education policy in the system. However, looking at both sides, they have a point but the ministry always has the final say.
