Covid made it impossible for students to be in class due to its way of spreading. Some schools that could start digital learning started and went on with school.
“Covid was a wake-up call to higher education institutions, the education sector in general, and the country to shift from normal things. And to shift from face-to-face to online learning. I urge higher education institutions to transform from ancient ways that have kept Africa backward,” she said.
Prof. Mary Okwakol, the Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education, reported to the minister that schools have faced a number of challenges.
This is in regard to adopting the new trend of online learning. Among them includes high internet costs, poor inter-connectivity and lack of ICT equipment among others.
“Students also have a negative attitude and mindsets towards virtual learning that must be changed because we are not going back to that era of face-to-face learning,” Okwakol said.
Janet Museveni, however, in response to this said the NRM government is aware of these challenges and working on them.
“The NRM government is aware of the challenges like access to stable and affordable internet connectivity that institutions are facing while moving towards a new world. We at the Ministry of Education are working to make the burden lighter in higher institutions of learning.”
