Apparently, this is a joint venture between the two mentioned companies. This process is scheduled to last not more than 20 months.
According to the Minister, the contractor will finance and also build the stadium. Hon Peter Ogwang further said that this infrastructure is key to the preparations of hosting the 2027 AFCON tournament.
This is why it will be fast-tracked for it’s quick completion. The Minister also appreciated President Museveni and the First Lady for identifying the contractor.
Read his tweet below;
“Plans to construct Aki Bua Stadium in Lira City have been finalized after we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Joint Venture of Khator Sports and SAMCO to construct the stadium in less than 20 months. The Contractor will finance and build the Stadium on a pre-finance basis. This sports infrastructure is a critical project in our preparations to host the 2027 AFCON. Therefore, it will be fast-tracked for its timely completion. I thank H.E President @KagutaMuseveni and the Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady @JanetMuseveni for identifying the contractor.”
It should be noted that last year, MPs from Lango subregion expressed their disappointment in the government over this stadium. It was a crucial piece in Uganda winning the PAMOJA joint bid to host the 2027 AFCON tournament.
This was with neighbors, Tanzania and Kenya. However, rumors swirled that the government had dropped it but the Speaker assured them that it would be constructed.
This stadium which was built in honor of Uganda’s Olympic steeple winner, the late John Aki Bua has been a topic of discussion for long.
Some years ago, the stadium was supposed to have been constructed to a world class facility. However, shoddy work was done on it and it’s been laughing stock for long.
