Joshua Cheptegei, the Ugandan three-time world champion has been ruled out of the 5000m men’s event at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The Team Uganda’s captain who clinched the 10,000m gold a few days ago has apparently pulled out due to a foot injury.
Benjamin Njia, the national coach, confirmed to reporters that the 26-year-old gold medalist is out of the competition.
“He (Cheptegei) will not be doing the 5000m,” Njia who doubles as the vice president of the Uganda Athletics Federation, added.
Without divulging details, Njia said, “The injury is on his foot making it difficult for him to race any more in the 2023 championship.”
This is the second time in a row Cheptegei has missed out on a double (10000m and 5000m) at the World Championships after suffering injury setbacks. During the last edition in Eugene, Oregon, Cheptegei finished ninth in the 5000m as he battled an injury. The same injury also denied the world record holder a chance to compete at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
the runner has sat out much of the year owing to injury-related issues. The latest setback only makes an already bad situation worse for Team Uganda who had already lost Jacob Kiplimo and Janat Chemusto to injury and suspension respectively.
