Kabale Municipality and parts of the wider district are facing a severe water crisis as the National Water and Sewage Corporation (NWSC) struggles to restore supply for over a week now. Residents and businesses now have to move long distances to access water.
Residents have resorted to contracting the services of boda boda riders and tri-cycles to ferry water.
Aggrey Matsiko, one of the affected residents said they were unaware of the reasons for the prolonged water outage. Apparently, they have not received any information from NWSC. He appealed to the leaders to consider following up on the incident because they are being adversely affected.
“We business people now spend a lot of money to have access to water. Water is life, our leaders should understand that people around town are suffering,” he said.
Waswa Bukhali, a hotel proprietor in Kabale town, expresses frustration with the lack of water at their workplaces. Apparently, this has forced them to pay others to fetch water, which is costly.
According to Patrick Otim, the National Water and Sewage Corporation manager for Kabale District, said they are aware of the challenge facing their clients. He said the fault resulted from the inconsistent power supply in Kabale. This destroyed one of the high-yielding water pump motors.
He further explained that they are currently operating at 40 percent capacity production. This is insufficient to supply the entire town. He assures that the team is on the ground to rectify the challenge and expects to reconnect clients within the next 24 hours.
