Kakwenza Rukirabashaija’s Children Called To Pick Passports At Immigration

When the week had just begun, lawyers petitioned the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) to accuse the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control of denying Kakwenza Rukirabashaija’s children passports.

One of the lawyers in a one page letter said three children paid for express passport processing and submitted all relevant information. They also apparently attended all necessary interviews in March 2022.

Nevertheless, despite all efforts to follow up on the matter, the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control is yet to issue the passports.

However though, the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control has denied these allegations by lawyers representing exiled Kakwenza.

The Internal Affairs publicist, Mr Simon Mundeyi said on Thursday that they do not deny Ugandans passports. He revealed that the only requirement for passports is being a citizen, not any other therefore if they applied for passports they should wait like other Ugandans.

“We have been clearing a backlog of 90,000 pending passport applications. We are now working on the last backlog which includes the children of Kakwenza and their passports will be issued on Monday. When Kakwenza’s children applied for passports, we were having a system upgrade,” he added.

BACKGROUND

33-year-old Kakwenza Rukirabashaija fled the country earlier this year following denial of his application to have his passport back. He required his passport so as to seek treatment abroad after security operatives tortured him while in custody.

Kakwenza is accused of using social media to insult President Museveni and his son, also the commander of the Land Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
