The property that got destroyed includes residential structures, shops and a beach management office that housed a boat engine. The destroyed property belonged to Robina Birabwa, Kasolo Saidi and Jeniffer Auma among others.
According to an eyewitness, the fire emerged from BMU offices where jerrycans of petrol were being kept.
“We have tried to put this fire down using basins and jerrycans and we have also demolished some residential houses but this has left many of our colleagues homeless,” said Athieno.
Police arrived quickly at the scene, though the residents said they didn’t give any assistance to put the fire out. However, the police revealed that such fires need a fire brigade which is not available at Kalangala Central Police Station.
The residents asked the government to at least provide them with one fire truck to help cater for such incidents.
This landing site is the main entry point to Kalangala district and vessels such as MV Kalangala and MV Vanessa dock here. A fire outbreak can easily lead to huge losses to the district if not responded to immediately.
