Katwe Police Commander Brutally Attacked By Suspect

Details are emerging on how assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Julius Gwaivu, the Katwe Police Divisional operations commander got attacked.

Apparently, a suspect he had already arrested turned against him and hit him so badly that it exposed part of the commander’s brain.

A video has made rounds on social media showing doctors attending to Gwaivu’s shattered head. Many have been left wondering how an officer could be hit to such an extent. Apparently, they usually have protection during operations.

However, though, criminal investigators boss in Katwe division, ASP James Illa Waigo, released a report from his investigations.

The findings were then shared with the Kampala Metropolitan police commander, SCP Stephen Tanui. The police operation director AIGP John Nuwagira also received a copy of this report.

The findings began with the injured officer accompanied by two of his juniors to arrest a suspect named Ronald Watenyeri. They embarked on this after booking the operation on SD 100/17/11.2022.

Watenyeri showed up on the police’s radar after a one Iddi Mafabi reported him for assault hence police’s interest in the suspect. Watenyeri got arrested from Kisekka market in Kampala CBD and they put him in a private vehicle.

However as Gwaivu drove away, three other people blocked him just about 300 meters from where he picked Watenyeri. The three have since been identified as Herbert Wekoye, Moses Wambuku and James Namanda.

“That Wekoye obstructed the way of police officers who were driving in a private vehicle by throwing his motorcycle in the way – forcing them to stop while Wambuku Moses blocked them from behind with a motor vehicle,” Waigo’s report reads in part.

One of the three, Wekoye, forcefully opened the car and helped Watenyeri to escape. This forced the police assistants to arrest Wekoye. He however resisted arrest and made an alarm which attracted a mob that started throwing stones at the car.

“When ASP Gwaivu got out of their car, the mob stopped throwing stones after knowing that the suspect Ronald was arrested by police. After Watenyeri Ronald escaped, he returned to the scene and assaulted the victim (ASP Gwaivu) with a metal,” Waigo’s report further reads.

Katwe police caught air of the attack and they recorded a case of assaulting a police officer and obstruction on duty. At that time, ASP Gwaivu’s colleagues had rushed him to the hospital where he needed urgent medical attention.

Apparently, Wekoye, Wambuku and Namanda James have been arrested. As for Watenyeri, he reportedly fled to Bududa after attacking the officer.

However, detective constable Joseph Muda and a team went to Bududa to arrest Watenyeri but did not succeed.
