KCCA Digs Up Eighth Street Road To Cover Potholes

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has again dug up a one-kilometer-long section of Eighth Street in Industrial Area. They intend to seal potholes using compacted gravel, barely three months after their last repair in the area.

M/s Ali, an engineering company responsible for the repairs, commenced its works about a week ago.

However, the continued digging up of roads and sealing of potholes raises questions about the competence of the contractors who take the deals.

It also undermines KCCA’s efforts to keep the roads in the city motorable.

The sealing of the roads on Eighth Street mirrors a road crisis in the country’s capital city where most of the roads have many potholes. This makes the maneuverability of motor vehicles very difficult and in most cases quickens the rate at which cars break down.

In February, an in-spot audit counted 223 potholes on Eighth Street. They stretched from the Mukwano road junction to the turn-off onto Main Access Road at the Ssali stage which connects to Seventh Street.

Ms. Juliet Bukirwa, the acting head of Public and Corporate Affairs, said Eighth Street is one of the roads earmarked for construction.

The roads will be bankrolled by the African Development Bank.

However, it is said that KCCA is sealing the potholes right now only to keep the roads motorable until the real construction begins.
