Kitara FC Ends Continental Journey Painfully Ends In A Loss

Uganda Premier League side Kitara FC ‘s debut in the continental tournament came to a crushing end in the first preliminary round when they lost 3-2 against Libya’s Al Hilal Benghazi.

Following a similar result in the rematch, the Royals lost 6-4 overall. The Libyans will now have to wait to play Al Masry of Egypt in the second preliminary round.

At the Martyrs of Benina stadium in Benghazi, Mohamed Salim scored in the first half and Hemeya Tanjy scored a brace in the second half for the home team. Substitutes Denis Omedi and Titus Ssematimba, scored for Brian Ssenyondo’s charges.

The Libyan team outperformed the hosts in attacks. This is despite having four forwards on their roster (Denis Omedi, Jude Ssemugabi, Brian Aheebwa, and George Ssenkaaba). Goalkeeper Farouk Yawe stood out, making over six excellent saves to keep the home team out.

Yawe’s save in the 40th minute allowed Salim to score on a rebound. Tito quickly equalized the visitors in the 57th minute with a brilliant shot, only moments after coming on for David Ndihabwe.

Kitara never gave up as Omedi put the tie in sight for the Royals with a goal in the 81st minute following a Kabon Living corner. Tany had doubled the hosts’ advantage two minutes later and then again in the 75th minute with a header from close range.

Ultimately, the wasteful but overpowering Libyans hung on for a well-earned victory. This will now allow Kitara to focus on the next domestic season, which begins in September.

Kitara however will feel let down by their Ugandan counterparts, Vipers and Namboole Stadium authorities. The Hoima-based side had to host their game abroad. This is after being denied access to Namboole Stadium and St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.
