Almost all the counting in the roman numerals is dependent upon the additive and subtractive system in which certain letters are denoted as the base numbers which are denoted in different combinations to state certain numbers.

The roman letters are actually the English alphabets but all the English alphabets are not the roman numerals. There are around 26 alphabets in the English language out of which 23 alphabets are considered in the roman numerals in one of the other forms. The alphabets that fall in the exemption of roman numerals are J, U, and W.

So the roman numerals from 1 to 1000 are stated below:

1= I, 2= II, 3= III, 4= IV, 5= V, 6= VI, 7= VII, 8= VIII, 9= IX, 10= X, 11= XI, 12= XII, 13= XIII, 14= XIV, 15= XV, 16= XVI, 17= XVII, 18= XVIII, 19= XIX, and 20= XX. This counting will remain from adding this way until 39 which will become XXXIX. Now 40 will become XL, so further the numbers will be added to get the further roman numerals till 49 i.e. XLIX. Now 50 will come out to be L, again the counting will keep on moving till 89 which will be LXXXIX. Now the 90 will be XC, so further numbers will be added to get roman numerals, and finally, 100 will be denoted as C.

200 will be denoted by CC, 300 with CCC, 400 with CD, 500 with D, 600 with DC, 700 with DCC, 800 with DCCC, 900 with CM, and finally 1000 with M.

The evaluation of the roman numerals is quite simple. The person just needs to expand the number and write their numbers accordingly. For example, there is the number 657, written in Roman numeral.

Solution: The expanded form of 657 is 600 + 50 + 7. So the Roman numeral for different numbers is 600 = DC, 50 = L and 7 = VII. So the final number will be DCLVII.

To read these numbers, the person needs to combine various letters and find the sum of the values. The numerals are placed from left to right and to determine the correct numbers, certain additions and subtractions are done. There is a specific and the most important rule in the roman numerals i.e. no symbol can be repeated the same in the row. Suppose if the roman numeral already has an IV in the row. Then there will not be a VI in the number. If the roman number calculation is not done right.

Though the learning of the roman numbers is quite fun there is the fact that it has many flaws in it. No person can deny it, as sometimes it becomes very difficult to calculate the most appropriate Roman numeral for the large number. There are certain other languages like Arabic and Hindu numeral systems that are more successful and clear than the Roman numeral.
