In a letter dated April 25, the University Professional and Academic Staff Union (UPASU) addressed the Minister of Public Service.
In the letter, the staff gave the government three months to enhance the salaries to lecturers to 100%.
Kituyi Mayoka, the UPASU Chairperson says the academic staff has been patient since 2015. This is the year when the first presidential directive got issued.
He further added that the staff persevered through the negative effects of the unfair salary enhancement.
Apparently, the salary enhancement neglects majority of the academic staff, adding that they only have one option of going on strike on August 2.
The president promised in 2015 to increase salaries of teaching staff in public universities. The increment would see professors earn shs15million and a senior lecturer earning shs12.2million.
The government saw it fit to implement the directive in a phased manner of five years. However though, the funds released by the government in the 2020/2021 FY amounting to Shs50 billion only favored professors and associate professors.
This saw the mentioned parties receive 100% of their salary increment (shs15 million).
Mukasa Muruli, the Minister of Public Service advised the staff to be patient as the government identifies funds to enhance their salaries.
