Mariachi was accused by Muslims of making disrespectful and offensive jokes about the religion last week. He however came out and apologized a few days ago.
His fellow comedians such as Alex Muhangi and the duo of Madrat & Chiko also apologized on his behalf.
However, it seems like the Moslems are yet to forgive him. He’s been getting bashed severely by social media users.
These have accused him of not being funny and only deriving his jokes by demeaning people’s culture, gender, tribes, and religions among other social aspects.
Isma however said that people should know that Uganda is a secular country. It’s not in Iraq or any other Muslim stronghold where the sharia law works.
People should take such issues with optimum care. He cited an example of a man who took a piss in a mosque in the presence of the prophet. However, when the sheikhs tried to beat up this man, the prophet stopped them.
This is because in the scuffle, the fluids could have spilled everywhere. The prophet then told this man that the mosque wasn’t a place for peeing but rather worship. Therefore if Mariachi and his likes are threatened, they might go out of control.
Isma added that Mariachi is a comedian. He therefore can’t make his skits about trees. Isma pointed out the Bizonto comedy group which performs in Catholic gowns and even mimics them. The church has however never lambasted them for this.
“I think it’s better we don’t turn into fanatics. This is not Iraq where we live in sharia law. Uganda is a secular and multi-religion country. I think it’s better to call and sit him down and tell him what he did was wrong. He’s a comedian which people ought to know. He therefore can’t be making his jokes about trees. Take an example of the Bizonto who perform in church gowns, I have never heard the Christians make a fuss about it,” said Isma.
