Tom Thomas Obur, the Ayami LC3 chairman, said the four were killed by lightning which struck the grass-thatched hut they were taking shelter in. The strike set the hut ablaze at around 6pm on March 25.
The deceased have been identified as Jimmy Obong, 32, Jenifer Acio, 26. Others are Brian Opok, 5, Brian Okum, 14, a brother of Acio. Obong had visited his sister in-law at Nga-akwia Village in Walela Parish. This is when the incident occurred. Opok was Acio’s son and Okum- her brother.
“When lightning struck the hut, there were five people in it. Only Godrine Opio who managed to escape unhurt and inform the LC1 chairman,”. The area LC3 chairman told Daily Monitor on the phone on Sunday.
Ms Vicky Angwech, a female youth councillor for Walela Parish, said the four died on their way to Ogur Health Centre IV. They were being rushed for treatment.
In a similar incident in early March 2023, lightening killed three family members in Rubanda District.
Apparently, Ms Allen Uwimana, a resident of Rwamuyora, Muko Sub-county in Rubanda District, was preparing lunch for her family on Sunday when rain clouds gathered.
When it started raining, her two children, who were with her in the kitchen, left to seek shelter in their grandfather’s house nearby. Her husband, who had returned the previous day from Tooro Sub-region, was having a nap in the bedroom.
A sudden lightning bolt struck the home. This killed her husband Ambrose Kanunu, 35, and sons Justus Asiimwe, 9, and Arnold Habomugisha, 6, who were still in the compound.
