The most affected village is Sariti with thieves reportedly said to be invading farmhouses and milking cows very late at night, shortly before farm owner’s wake up to milk their cows.
One of the victims identified as Wambui Elizabeth, 78, mentioned that 6 of her neighbours have equally complained about the reduction of milk from their dairy cows during early morning milking sessions, saying it’s always the period they surely expect the production to double.
Currently, I milk just three kilos in the evening and yet I used to milk from 5 to 7 kilos every morning, which has now made a reduction to less than one kilo in morning hours,’she said.
I called my veterinary officer who wasn’t able to identify the sudden change in milk production. However, after milking, the livestock thieves now days streak the cows ‘udder,’ Wambui said.
One of the residents said the thieves normally attack at around 3am before the owners who do the milking at 4am to be able to deliver to their customers.
