Local Government Boss Collapses In Office, Dies

A senior official in the Ministry of Local Government on Wednesday afternoon collapsed in his office. After rushing him to Nakasero hospital, they declared him dead.

Doctors at Nakasero hospital declared Lawrence Banyoya, the secretary of the LG Commission dead at around 3:00 pm. He had previously held several meetings in Kampala on Tuesday.

Banyoya, together with the LG State  Minister, Victoria Rusoke and other commission members, met Public Service and LG Committee of parliament.

The cause of his death hadn’t been released by press time but some guess Banyoya died of natural causes. Family sources said they will announce details of his funeral soon.

However, other relatives say his burial awaits a police report.

In related news, Uganda Local Government Workers Union a few months ago petitioned Parliament to intervene in their pursuit for better working conditions.

Mr. Hassan Mudiba, the Union’s General Secretary, while presenting the petition to the former Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, in February 2021 said the government had failed to respect the Collective Bargaining Agreement it had signed with the Union and other Public Service Labour Unions in June 2018.
