Makerere University Council Releases New Guild Elections Guide

Makerere University Council has after a long time released a new guild elections guide that will be followed as students vote for their president. This follows the suspension of the guild elections that were scheduled for July.

This was due to the violence that led to the death of a student. The university set up a select committee chaired by Assoc. Prof. Helen Nambalirwa Nkabala which has made the recommendations.

The Makerere University Council sighted a number of defects in the way guild elections have been operating. Interference of external parties in students’ electoral activities, including from political parties and self-seeking individuals.

Manipulation of unsuspecting students for personal gain out of the guild processes. High level of monetization of the electoral process.

Therefore the committee identified some solutions to this; the enactment of the Makerere University Student’s Guild Statute. Commitment to prioritize avenues for fostering intellectual engagement of students and staff.

The committee also resolved to invest in robust student leadership development programmes at Makerere and strengthen the university security as well.

According to the new guide, election of the students’ constitutional review Commission is on 27th August 2022. Commencement of the constitutional review process is on 5th September 2022 which will go till 5th October 2022.

Finally the Electoral process of the University leadership will start on 6th October 2022.
