Makerere University School Of Public Health Marks 25 Years Anniversary

After many years of progressive training of health professionals across Sub Sahara Africa, Makerere University School of Public health celebrated 25 years of existence and contribution to human resource development of the country.

The celebration under the theme:twenty five years of public health training in Africa:looking back and forward to accelerate the contribution of schools of public health towards universal health coverage in Africa provided opportunity for reflection and recognition  towards Sustainable Development Goals.

Makerere University School of Public Health is one of the four successful school that constitute Makerere University College of Health Sciences. It evolved from department of preventive medicine under the faculty of medicine I 1954 to being the first I situate of public health in Africa in 1974 and finally school of Public health in 2007.

The master of public health programmes the flagship programme is the oldest programme in Africa.

Dr Rhodes Wanyenze the Dean said since inception 1994, average enrollment to  master of public health has increased from 8 students per year to 100 per year and to date there are 628 master of public health graduates.

She said the biggest number of graduates work in Uganda 89%,2%in Sudan, United States of America, South Africa, DR Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, Netherlands and Switzerland.

Locally majority of graduates are employed in academia, ministry of health, district local government, regional and international development partners in Uganda.

Commenting about future plans, Wanyenze said they plan to develop.

10 years strategic plan to reposition the university as centre of excellence and focus health promotion and translating research to solve community problems.
