Makerere University staff members are considering going on strike due to prolonged delays in their promotions and salary increments,
The potential strike poses a significant concern for the institution and highlights the growing discontent among employees.
However through there joint staff association Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), Makerere University Administrative Staff Association (MASA)and the National Union of Education Institutions (NUEI) they highlighted resolutions they made after an earlier joint meeting.
They raised concerns about the delay in the implementation of promotions and salary increments, which were supposed to be effective from July 2020.
However these delays have left many staff feeling frustrated and demotivated. The university’s administration has been grappling with financial challenges, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
These financial constraints have resulted in the inability to fulfill the promised promotions and salary increments.
Staff members argue that the delays are unfair and impacting their livelihoods. The affected staff members have expressed their discontent and are now contemplating taking industrial action to force the university administration to address their concerns promptly.
However the potential strike could have severe ramifications for the institution, especially if key personnel from various departments decide to participate.
The staff members’ demand for timely promotions and salary increments is understandable, as these are crucial elements in recognizing their professional growth and ensuring fair compensation for their services.
The delay in implementing these measures not only affects employee morale but also hampers the university’s ability to attract and retain qualified staff members.
It remains to be seen how the university administration will respond to these grievances. As negotiations continue, it is essential for both parties to engage in constructive dialogue and explore possible solutions that prioritize the well-being of the staff while considering the financial constraints faced by the institution.
The potential strike threat by Makerere University staff members over delayed promotions and salary increments underscores the importance of addressing employee concerns and ensuring fair compensation.
Resolving these issues promptly will not only help retain valuable employees but also contribute to the overall success and reputation of the institution.
