According to Road Traffic Injuries Research Network Board Chair who also doubles as Dean of Makerere University School of Public Health Dr Olive Kobusingye said the awards we created to recognize efforts of journalists who go extra mile to report on road safety to ensure there is consistent Information flow and reduction of road Carnegie deaths.
“We are seeking partnership with media practitioners to consider reporting on road safety issues. Annually we see the trend of road accidents increase but we would like to see the trend reduce by enticing the media to take keen interest in reporting about road safety. Those that will work with us in creating awareness about the road safety will be recognize, “Kobusingye said.
She revealed this initiative last week during three days media road safety training workshop in Kampala.
The purpose of the training was to interest journalists to prioritize road safety reporting on their schedule so that road accidents trend can be reduced.
According Dr Kobusingye road accidents kill 1.35 million people worldwide every year adding that road accidents are the leading cause of death among young people around the world and among children in Africa.
She said the number of cars on the road is projected to rise from 800 million today to 2.5 billion by 2050. As more people gain access to this form of mobility, road safety is proving vital.
Accordingly, the United Nations has set the ambitious objective of halving the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020.
Okoth Ochola Inspector General of Police in related interview said generally, in the year 2020, there was 8.9% decrease in the volume of crimes reported to Police from 215,224 cases reported in 2019 to 195,931 cases reported in the year 2020.
There was also a 4.7% reduction in the number of traffic accidents reported in 2020 from 12,858 accidents reported in 2019 to 12,249 accidents reported in 2020. On the contrary, in terms of Fire and Rescue emergencies, there was a 1.6% increase in incidents handled, from 999 incidents handled in 2019 to 1,015 handled in 2020.
