Ministry Of Education In Talks To Re-open Schools For All Students

There is a glimpse of hope for all students to report back to school either this month or next month. This has come after a meeting that the ministry had regarding the state of the education sector in Uganda.

Earlier on, the ministry of education had settled for only opening for candidates and finalists. However, advisors told them this could disorganize the education system.

Much as this is being thought about, it’s still being tabled because of the Coronavirus whose vaccine is not yet here. The ministry of education agrees that this will be very risky for the students and also the country at large. For this matter, they are still waiting for permission from the ministry of health regarding this issue.

“We have not yet decided when others will join. It might be this month or the next. We are still in discussions with the Ministry of Health to be properly guided. Remember we are adding on students. We are not adding on infrastructure. We need guidance on how to reopen for the rest of the learners…” Mr Ismail Mulindwa, the ministry of Education director for basic education, yesterday said .

Students have lost almost a full academic year of education. The government closed schools last year in March in an attempt at containing the spread of Covid-19. Since then, the ministry allowed only candidates to report back and currently in there third term. The ministry will reach a conclusion next week and inform parents. Otherwise, we are all still required to social distance and mask up. Covid-19 still kills and is spreading at a much more faster rate according to the statistics.
