Mortuary Attendant In Kabale Arrested For Asking For Money From Family Before Releasing Their Deceased Relative

Police in Kabale have arrested a mortuary attendant for withholding a dead body from family members before they give him money.

Gerald Gundu, who works at Kabale regional referral hospital, had allegedly refused to hand over a dead body to its relatives before paying him shillings 300,000.

The deceased apparently disappeared on August 30 but was found by the locals on August 31st upon search. He was found in a water stream at Rwakaraba northern division with multiple cuts on the head.

When police came to visit the scene, the body was then coveyed to Kabale regional referral hospital mortuary for postmortem. However, afterward, the attendant declined to release it.

The family members reported this matter to the police and this was confirmed by Kigezi regional spokesperson Elly Mate.

“Gerald Gundu, the mortuary attendant at Kabale hospital has been arrested as he was soliciting for shillings 300,000 bribe from the relatives of the above-mentioned body to be released from the mortuary,” he confirmed.

Meanwhile, the murder case is registered under file vide; KLE’ CRB 614/2022. This is of murder of a one Surura Turyahika aged 27, resident of Rwakaraba cell, northern division, Kabale municipality.

Police is still going on with investigations to reach the roots of this crime that led to someone’s death.
