Mathias Mpuuga made the announcement on Tuesday about the new changes in one of the accountability committees of Parliament and shadow ministers’ leadership.
The changes saw the opposition drop the MP, Mapenduzi (independent), replacing him with Gilbert Olanya (Forum for Democratic Change). Gilbert Olanya is the Kilak South MP and is now the new chairperson of the public accounts committee (local government).
The speaker told the MPs that she had received communication from the LOP about the developments. However, she revealed that the House needed to take a decision before implementing the same.
She further said a formal motion should be tabled for the entire Parliament to vote. In addition, the old leadership to first finish pending work before a change-up.
“The responsibility of this designation is vested in the chief whip.” That is acceptable, but the re-designation will be by way of a formal motion for re-designation. “The motion will be subjected to approval by the House. As we wait for that, we will bring a motion, but that will be after the committee has finished the work assigned to them. For now, we are not taking the re-designation,” Among ruled.
Mpuuga however countered suggesting that the matter be handled administratively without subjecting it to a contest in the whole House.
Mpuuga, who is also the MP for Nyendo-Mukungwe, explained that under a multi-party dispensation, the party whips were at liberty to designate members for efficient work and all intended objectives.
