Muhoozi Not Retiring Anytime Soon – Sources

Contrary to what he announced yesterday, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba will not retire from the army. He tweeted an announcement that after 28 years of service in the “greatest military in the world”, he was happy to announce his retirement.

The announcement went viral on online platforms sparking debates.

Many asked themselves whether the first son would leave the military to concentrate on a political career. For a couple of years now, rumor has moved around of president Museveni preparing his son to succeed him.

Hours after the announcement though, a video of Muhoozi surfaced with the UPDF commander of Land forces. In the video, he clarified that Muhoozi would be leaving the army after 8 years.

“I am not leaving tomorrow but after 8 years,” Muhoozi is clearly heard saying in the video.

The first son joined the military in 1999, and that makes it 23 years in active service, not 28 as earlier said.

Apparently, the Commander in Chief (CIC) Gen Yoweri Museveni rejected the decision to retire by the first son.

Sources say that Muhoozi has not even reached the age of retirement. More to that, there is a formal procedure through the promotions and commissions board of the UPDF which allows a soldier to retire.

A soldier has to apply first which Muhoozi had apparently not done. He simply showed interest in retiring through his socials.

In his 23 years of military service, he has held sensitive positions including commanding Special Forces twice. He also held an elite unit of UPDF that oversees the security of the first family among other installations in the country.

The General is also credited for engaging President Paul Kagame who agreed to open the Rwanda-Uganda border. Uganda had closed the border with Uganda for three years following a diplomatic conflict.
