Museveni, Kenyatta Led Different Delegations Into Bilateral Discussions

Shortly after arriving in Mombasa, President Uhuru Kenyatta and president Museveni led their different delegations into bilateral discussions where they covered a lot of ground, especially on matters trade and politics.

The discussions they engaged in are important because they are providing real solutions to their people’s problems.

I am glad that our Kenyan counterparts have agreed to let Uganda increase its sugar exports from 36,000 metric tonnes to 90,000 metric tonnes annually. Also, it is important that Uganda will resume its poultry exports to Kenya within a week from now,’’said Museveni.

The other sectors in Uganda that should benefit from these agreements are our dairy producers who will have less paperwork to do in order to export to Kenya. Our tile makers also should look forward to accessing the Kenyan market.

In return, Uganda will immediately lift the ban on beef imports from Kenya, since the mad cow disease that occasioned this ban is no more. There are more areas of trade cooperation that should be looked at and I ask our technocrats to explore these opportunities,’’he said.

These are just some of the few areas in which we have agreed to cooperate. Our government officials will avail the detailed communique that captures all areas of cooperation in security, foreign affairs, trade and social/cultural affairs.

I thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for inviting me to make this visit. I must commend him for his Pan-African credentials and working tirelessly towards easing trade between Kenya and Uganda. I think his appreciation of these issues has to do with his background in business,’he added

President Museveni also said he’s gladly looking forward to using the Makadara Express train on the Standard Gauge Railway from Mombasa to Nairobi tomorrow. Apparently, I will be the first visiting head of state to use this facility. I am honoured,’he said.
