Museveni Opens 8 Factories In Jinja, Buikwe Which Will Create Over 5,000 Jobs

The president of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni opened eight factories in Jinja and Buikwe districts and commissioned the MMP Industrial Park, run by our investor friend Magan Patel.

The factories he commissioned will create 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and produce a variety of products including aluminum, textiles, batteries, steel and ethanol. When the park is fully operational, it will employ upto 12,000 people.

The formula to job creation is through the private sector. As government, we have ensured peace and stability, provided infrastructure like roads and electricity and skilled the human resource. We now must fight corruption that frustrates investors,’Museveni said.

He says wages in factories should be profitable

The call that workers in the factories be paid higher wages must be scientific. Wages should be tied to profitability otherwise you could run down a factory by insisting on high wages.

I am glad that the industrial park will sit in Buwampa, a village I used to sneak through to get to Lake Victoria and cross to Kenya during the Bush War. Indeed rebellion has bore development. It will become a town of factories, not just shops,’he said.

To the investors, they will get tax incentives just like we have done with others. We are not interested in direct tax. If you manufacture products here and employ our people, we can still get money through indirect taxes.

Your request for land to set up a pharmaceutical factory will be granted. I am glad you are setting up a facility to produce paper. Currently, Uganda spends $130m on importing paper. We shall start a drive to grow bamboo to support the paper factory. I thank you all,’he added.
