According to reports, over 9 billion shillings allocated through the Office of the Prime Minister last year to revitalize coffee production and marketing has not been properly accounted for.
Legislators demand an investigation into the Shs 9.6 billion expenditure on coffee related activities including teaching Ugandans about coffee consumption due to concerns about misuse of public funds and the lack of accountability in the project.
Questions have been raised in Parliament about the lack of transparency around the utilization of the sizable funds. MPs want a full probe into how the money was used.
Meanwhile the speaker of parliament has ordered an inquest into how the government gave the green light to a Shs 9.6 billion expenditure clothed in among others .
The allegations have emerged just as the coffee industry is struggling with several challenges like aging farms, low yields and drops in global prices that have hurt incomes.
Opposition lawmakers have launched scathing attacks against Nabbanja for alleged mismanagement and embezzlement of resources crucial for the sector’s recovery.
Meanwhile in response, Nabbanja has promised to respond to the audit queries and assured of government’s commitment to revive the historic cash crop.
However, given the massive sums involved, independent investigations will be closely watched to ascertain the veracity of the bribery claims leveled against top officials.
Stakeholders are determined to get to the bottom of where exactly the billions were channeled as smallholders face hardships on their plantations.
