The company which distributes Mahindra small and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, utility vehicles, construction and, farming equipment plans to engage stakeholders like farmers, government officials and the business community to sensitize them on Mahindra’s brand offering of tractors and other agricultural implements.
The company which joined the Ugandan new car market in 2016 is laying strategies for the Mahindra brand penetration into the market through participation in farmers’ expos and demonstrations.
Ndovu Motors Marketing and Communication Manager Asiimwe Shamim called upon government to allocate money for sensitization on the need for mechanization of agriculture to ensure food security.
“Unless farmers come together under farmer’s cooperatives, it will be difficult for them to pool resources individually to purchase the agricultural implements needed for mechanization despite the access to financing from several commercial banks,’’she said.
Shamim says on top of promoting mechanization of agriculture, the company is conducting demonstrations to train farmers across the country on the use of Mahindra tractors and farm implements to enhance mechanization of agriculture.
“Besides advocating for the mechanization of agriculture in Uganda, government has to come out directly to support farmers’ groups and cooperatives to enable individual farmers to pool resources needed to buy tractors and other farm implements that will guarantee high yields, “Asiimwe said.
“We appreciate government’s initiatives like National Agriculture Advisory Services and Operation Wealth creation, however more should be done to provide tax incentives on the importation of tractor spare parts to make them affordable for more Ugandans to embrace commercial farming,” she added.
Mahindra which is India’s world leading manufacturer of tractors, construction equipment’s, trucks and commercial cars enjoys the largest market share in tractor sales worldwide.
