This song beat off competition from other hit songs such as Ayra Starr’s “Rush”, Burna Boy’s “It’s Plenty”, Davido feat Musa Key’s “Unavailable”, Libianca’s “People”, Wizkid feat Ayrra Starr’s “2 Sugar” and Fireboy DML’s “Bandana.”
This win also cemented him as the first artist to win the award as the category was recently created. Just a few days ago, Spotify revealed that the young singer had become the first African artist to collect a billion views on the platform. These were for this song and Rema called it a blessing.
“It’s a blessing. It’s not just a big win for me, my team and family, it’s also a big one for the culture. I feel really happy and I’m really proud of the fans as well for going back to the song and putting people on the song. Shout out to the DJs and everyone who made this possible,” Rema said.
Meanwhile, Shakira took home the Video Vanguard Award. She became the first South American singer to win the award introduced in honor of Michael Jackson.

Ice Spice was named best new artist with Nicki Minaj bagging the best rapper award. Taylor Swift who was nominated in 8 categories also walked away with the Album of the Year award.
