Nigerian Singer Rema Bags First VMAs Award

Nigerian singer Rema has really enjoyed his stint in the music industry ever since his rise to stardom. The singer has now bagged his first Video Music Awards at the just concluded  MTV 2023 VMA’s.

The singer saw his smash hit remix, Calm Down featuring American singer Selena Gomez bag the best Afrobeats song.

This song beat off competition from other hit songs such as Ayra Starr’s “Rush”, Burna Boy’s “It’s Plenty”, Davido feat Musa Key’s “Unavailable”, Libianca’s “People”, Wizkid feat Ayrra Starr’s “2 Sugar” and Fireboy DML’s “Bandana.”

This win also cemented him as the first artist to win the award as the category was recently created. Just a few days ago, Spotify revealed that the young singer had become the first African artist to collect a billion views on the platform. These were for this song and Rema called it a blessing.

“It’s a blessing. It’s not just a big win for me, my team and family, it’s also a big one for the culture. I feel really happy and I’m really proud of the fans as well for going back to the song and putting people on the song. Shout out to the DJs and everyone who made this possible,” Rema said.

Meanwhile, Shakira took home the Video Vanguard Award. She became the first South American singer to win the award introduced in honor of Michael Jackson.

Taylor Swift won the video of the year award for her Anti-hero song and also won artist of the year accolade. Taylor Swift still won the song of the Year with her Anti-Hero song.
