No Ugandan Artiste Nominated For Grammy Awards

The final nominations for the 66th Grammy Awards was released last night and apparently, there aren’t any Ugandan artistes. For the previous awards, Big Talent boss, Eddy Kenzo owned the headlines after he became the first indigenous and mainstream Ugandan to be nominated.

There was hope that he might again get nominated and even be joined by some of his fellow Ugandans. However, this was after the pre-list showed a couple of Ugandan musicians named.

Swangz Avenue singer, Vinka was considered for Best Global Music Performance and Best African Music Performance for her song, Bailando. Unfortunately, she didn’t make the final cut.

Dr Jose Chameleone was also considered for the Best Global Music Performance and Best Music Video. This was for the song Ready in which he featured Jamaican reggae group, Morgan Heritage.

Additionally, Eddy Kenzo had a number of considerations. They included Best Global Music Performance, Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. But he also didn’t pick up a nomination.

For the categories where Africans were featured, Davido and Burna Boy dominated. Davido who is yet to win a Grammy racked up 3 nominations.

Among these included Best Global Music Performance for his song Feel. Burna Boy also in this category was nominated for his song Alone.

In the Best African Music Performance, nominations were as follows,

Amapiano – Asake and Olamide

City Boys – Burna Boy

Unavailable – Davido featuring Musa Keys

Rush – Ayra Starr

Water – Tyla.

Overall, American RnB singer, SZA picked up the most nominations with 9 in total. Taylor Swift who has won every possible award this year also bagged a few nominations. She even broke a long-standing record previously held by Sir Paul McCartney, Lionel Richie and herself.

They all held six nominations for the best songwriter of the year and she’s now at 7. The ceremony will take place on Feb. 4, 2024 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
