NUP Supporters To Spend More Time Behind Bars

The Court-martial today 8th June 2021 was supposed to hear a bail application for the remaining 18 members of the incarcerated NUP supporters.

However, these NUP members are likely to spend more time behind bars with the latest development. According to NUP leaders, they were optimistic that finally after numerous snags, court would release their members.

“Today, 18 of our comrades who were arrested last year in Kalangala return to the court-martial for their bail application ruling. These comrades have spent six months in detention & have been previously denied bail with no legal justification. We pray that they will be released today.” NUP posted on it’s social media handles.

The group that includes popular faces in Nubian Li, Dan Magic and Eddie Mutwe have been in jail for almost 7 months.

Security forces arrested over 100 NUP supporters on a campaign trail of Robert Kyagulanyi last year in Kalangala district.

However, court released them in different intervals and only 18 remain in Kitalya government prison.

NUP took to it’s social media handles to announce the unfortunate news. They said court didn’t give any valid reason for the adjournment.

NUP alleges that this is a government scheme to keep their comrades in jail.

“Our comrades who were supposed to appear in court today for their bail application ruling won’t be attending court today. We have been informed that court has been adjourned with no reason given. This is another scheme to continue keeping our comrades under illegal detention.” The tweet read.

The court Martial has not yet provided an update on this matter.

No one knows if this is because of the President’s recent directive that suspended most public activities for 42 days.
