Nurses, Midwives Threaten To Lay Down Tools Over Lack Of Protective Equipments

Officials of Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union (UNMU) in Jinja District have given government only 3 days ultimatum to supply them with protective equipments, if not they will stop working.

The head of State in his last nation address said it clearly that it will be mandatory for everybody to put on face masks especially those leaving their homes heading to public places as a way to fight the spread of coronavirus in Uganda.

On Monday, the UNMU Jinja branch Chairman Mr Amukun Stephen explained that their conclusion follows the National Medical Stores (NMS) which supplied medicine last week for 2 cycles without Face masks.

“Nurses at healthcare centres have not received any mask yet. It is mandatory for each and everyone to wear face mask,’said president Museveni.

Mr Amukun noted that healthcare workers are facing several challenges during this pandemic lockdown including lack of goggles for midwives carrying out delivery, lack of enough gloves and transport.

The decision of midwives and nurses for the challenges stated above, mainly the face masks and goggles used by midwives, will continue to work for the next three days, failure to provide the above will result into laying down of tools,’part of the letter reads.
