The Grade one Magistrate, Mr Edward Akankwasa, denied Odong Otto bail and remanded him until April 6, 2021.
Through his lawyer, Mrs Juliet Oyullu of Odonga Otto, and company advocates, Odong had asked to be released on bail. However, the state prosecutor, Mr Tomson Epia told the court that they completed the investigations into the charges against him. This thereby forced the magistrate to deny the MP his bail request.
The magistrate, upon remanding Odong, said the court hearing of his case will start on April 6 when he returns to court. The magistrate also directed authorities to first quarantine the MP and subject him to a Covid-19 test before taking him to prison.
The charge sheet released showed that Mr Odong, on May 6, 2018, assaulted Mr Henry Mugisha a Fuso truck driver. The incident happened at Ogan Kanakok, Pajule Sub-County in Pader district. Mr Odong apparently destroyed the windscreen of the Fuso truck vehicle UAR 234C.
During the assault, he reportedly caused grievous bodily harm to Mr Mugisha.
The legislator, however, denied all of these charges.
Mr Odong is one of the 12 lawmakers in Acholi who lost in the recently concluded elections. Mrs Oyullu, who is also his wife, says the court’s decision to deny her husband bail is very disappointing.
