According to Opondo, the country cannot be celebrating that a game Park here was named after a monarch miles and miles away.
He suggested they adopt the original name, Kazinga National Park. This followed the death of the Queen of Britain, Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth.
Opondo however expressed his condolences to the British Royal Family after some people had deemed his comment controversial.
“We can’t be celebrating that our national park was named after Queen Elizabeth II. Let’s consider renaming it to its original name, Kazinga National Park. Nonetheless, I want to express my condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in the world.”
It should be recalled that during the colonial era, most indigenous names of towns, different physical features and other things were dumped in favor of the names of colonizers.
Despite several attempts to rename these features indigenous names, the attempts have been less successful.
Meanwhile, the world is currently mourning the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. She passed away yesterday at the age of 96 years having reigned for 70 years making her the longest ruler in Great Britain’s monarchical rule.
She was consequently succeeded by her eldest son Prince Charles.
