Cheptegei won two medals, silver in 10000m and gold in the 5000m which helped Uganda finish as the 2nd best African team and 35th overall.
The IGP also congratulated Peruth Chemutai who also won gold in the 3000m steeplechase. Both Cheptegei and Chemutai serve in the Police force.
“I want to personally thank IP Joshua Cheptegei who pulled off two incredible performances to become a double medalist with gold in the 5000m race and silver in the 10000m race. And also greatly thank SPC Peruth Chemutai who made history and became the first female police athlete to win a gold medal when she won it in the 3000m steeplechase.” The IGP’s statement read.
He also thanked them for emulating the late John Akii-Bua who was the first athlete to win Uganda a gold medal in the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Ochola also commended the other athletes who represented the country and fell short of medals saying they shouldn’t give up.
The IGP also appreciated all the staff involved in preparing these athletes. They helped them succeed despite the challenging COVID 19 times.
He also never forgot his predecessor General Kale Kayihura. He praised Kayihura for revamping sports in the police force in 2012.
Ochola went ahead to say that this success from the police athletes was a result of Kayihura’s guidance.
He concluded by assuring athletes that there is a bright future for sports in the police.
Ochola said that they are going to identify young talent across all sports disciplines and groom them.
