Dr. Tanga Odoi, the Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, has said the opposition should get ready for more defeat. He said this while commenting about the Soroti City East by-elections that were just concluded last week.
By the end of the election exercise, NRM had won the race to the dismay of opposition. Odoi, however, says this is just the beginning.
“Soroti was hot because it has for a while been a bed of FDC. The two leading candidates (Ariko and Attan) had been members of FDC. One of them (Ariko) crossed to NRM. You are going to see more defeat because we have a General Secretary who is a strategist. Our strategy is one they don’t understand.”
Hon. Ssemujju Nganda said matters are not being said as they should because NRM didn’t win fairly. He says a number of cases were brought to their attention regarding the stuffing of ballot papers.
However, he says the government is setting a bad precedent for the country.
“There is a polling station where voting was closed at lunchtime, and voting material was taken away. This election took a direction I haven’t seen before. We are setting a very bad precedent for our country.”
Ssemujju accused Tanga in the same regard saying he was part of the people that arrested FDC agents.
“FDC agents who were arrested before the election started were brought back by Tanga Odoi in the evening to sign the declaration forms at gunpoint. He was shouting, “I am not begging you. You must sign.”
